The Hiring Conundrum

The Hiring Conundrum

If you've ever said, "If I want to do something right, I have to do it myself," you need to read this.

A similar mindset is, "There are no good people available."

Most small business owners are frustrated technicians who decided to go into business themselves. The problem is that good at your trade and good at running a business are entirely different skill sets.

One of the most critical skills every business owner has to master is hiring. Granted, hiring people is not easy. Personnel issues, unreliable workers, and shabby work all come with the territory, and many small business owners don't consider this ahead of time.

Hiring Doesn’t Have To Be Difficult

The good news is there is a proven way to overcome it. The first thing you must do is change your mindset and understand that hiring is not a crapshoot. But it is one of the most critical aspects of running a business.

A typical hiring process we see contractors use is to bid on jobs and get them, then hire people who can pass a drug test, or worse, hire friends and family, many of whom aren't entirely qualified. It's no wonder you end up with crews that are hard to manage and unreliable.

When we share this observation with new clients, we hear, "People just aren't as dependable as they used to be." Is this the truth or just a self-fulfilling prophecy? Are there no good people, or do you need a better way of attracting them to work for your company?

A Better Way To Recruit

A good business owner knows what kind of people he is looking for, how to get them to apply, how to sift through candidates, and how to keep them loyal.

In advertising for a position, these are the three things you MUST do to find good candidates.

1.) Be clear about the position. Have an accurate job title and job description.
2.) Remember this is a sales pitch! GOOD candidates will have plenty of other opportunities. Give at least three reasons why they should choose your company.
3.) Define what the potential for growth is in your company. Explain how you expect your company to grow and how this position will have future growth opportunities.

Once you change your mindset and establish a process for hiring and training, you will be closer to running a real business. Done correctly, it will be a successful business that allows you to spend more time with your family and live the life you've always envisioned.

Are you afraid that once you find good people and train them, you'll lose them? Or worse, they decide to leave and start their own business—as your competitor?
